While reading through my twitter feed, I got an interesting tweet which pointed to the following Ubuntu bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evolution/+bug/615300
Enable default Evolution signature as "Sent from Ubuntu"
Someone wanted to copy the "Sent from iPhone" idea for the Ubuntu machines. Just like any other online long discussion, most of the arguments I believe will be time-wasting to read ;-)
Evolution has Face header support for a long time now and I wonder if the next course of action will be to add the distro logo as the Face header for all mails sent from the distro. For Face header screenshots, Look here.

It will no longer do so, it has been fixed as of today.

We already did something similar in GAIM, at Ximian, about 8 years ago. There was a patch to set the default buddy icon to a PNG of Rupert, the Ximian mascot.
Debian took the patch, and changed it to default to the Debian logo.
I don't see what people are so whiney about. It's not like it's anything new to do it now. :)
It's funny to me that this is the only part of this huge effort that anyone has noticed.
Do you use Chromium or Epiphany on Ubuntu? Your useragent is now fixed to reflect that. You know how 1/3 of linux desktop browsing share is historically unidentifiable? When 10.10 is released, that 1/3 will be ...diminished.
Maybe Canonical should start contributing to Evolution before trying to take credit. Red Hat and Novell certainly do.
Is Canonical taking credit with this? Would "Sent from Evolution" be any better? Or perhaps "Sent from Evolution on Ubuntu?" Would the reaction have been any different if the wording had been more balanced to give credit to the Evolution authors? Doubtful. The negative reaction was purely about turning on an advertising sig by default.
If you think it inappropriate for Canonical to "take credit" for Evolution in this manner, you should file another bug to suggest more balanced wording. The signature string in question is still pre-populated in the codebase. The sig feature is just disabled by default now.
